Much of the art I create is about communication, and chairs are some of my favorite subjects for this theme because they are so good at providing insight into their personalities through their body postures. We all speak with our bodies, and we all betray a lot more then we think we do with expressions and gestures. The point of this observation is not that I want people to feel inhibited; I want us to all relax and enjoy the art of conversation. We should all be at least as intentional as chairs with our body language!
Right after coming up with the theme ‘Chairs with Attitudes’, I drove by a chair sunbathing on a table in a patch of weeds on Calhoun Street. I quickly parked the car and ran over to take a photo before it got up and left. I was awed with the simultaneous stiffness and grace the chair displayed.
The chairs and stools in my studio have been flirting, gossiping, and clowning around all year.
